How to set up your visitorlevy.scot account

Sign in to visitorlevy.scot with a mygovscot myaccount, then add your property, using a registration code if you were sent one. You can't submit a return until your property is verified, so don't leave it until the week of the deadline.

Which login do I need?

A mygovscot myaccount, unless you pay business rates on the property.

If youSign in with
Pay business rates (non-domestic rates) on the propertyA bisaccount.scot
Don't pay business rates on itYour own mygovscot myaccount

If you don't have one yet, you can register for either. The account is personal to you and can't be transferred.

Do I need a registration code?

No, but it makes it quicker.

You may get an email from visitorlevy.scot with a unique code. The code holds details about your property that the council already has. If you didn't get one, check your junk folder. If it isn't there, you can add your property by hand instead.

What do I need to add my property?

Your Council Tax or business rates reference, or your short-term let licence number.

If you add the property without a code, the terms of use and VisitScotland's guide say you'll be asked for:

  • your Council Tax or business rates reference number, if you pay either for the property
  • if you pay neither, more information, including your short-term let licence number
  • the type of accommodation and the number of rooms or units
  • your website and VAT number, if you have them
  • your contact details

I haven't described each screen, because they may change. The site has its own user guides.

How long does verification take?

It depends on whether your details match the council's.

If they match what the council holds, your property is verified. If they don't, council staff check it by hand. Until it's verified, you can't submit a return or pay. The council doesn't say how long a manual check takes, so if your deadline is close, set up the account today and email [email protected] before the deadline.

Can I work out my figures before the account is ready?

Yes. Your figures come from your bookings, not the portal, so you can do the sums first and file once the account is ready.

Two things to know once you're in

  • The site logs you out after 10 minutes of doing nothing. Click Save for later as you go.
  • Your account is disabled after 15 months without use.

Who do I contact if I'm stuck?

The council's Visitor Levy team: [email protected] or 0131 200 2331. For technical problems with the site, use the support link on visitorlevy.scot.

Rather set it up together?

In a 60-minute video call, we set up your account if you haven't yet, then do your return together on your computer, start to finish.
